Internet forums may have occasional tales of Porsche owners who have driven on for six months between the warning light coming on and having the brake pads changed, but even if they are entirely accurate, everyone’s driving style is different and wear rates are not uniform. And as you own a car capable of doing exhilarating speeds, isn’t it just common sense to make sure the brakes are in good condition?
If the brake pads are worn enough to trigger the sensor, it is sensible to get them changed as soon as possible. The minimum depth for passing an MOT is 1.5mm and the warning light typically comes on at around 2mm, so the pads do need to be replaced quickly to avoid safety issues or damage to the brake discs.
Any good Porsche specialist will check the brake pads as part of either a minor or major service and give you an update on their condition (and if necessary add an advisory note to the invoice), so that you know roughly when they will need to be replaced and can budget accordingly.
