Is a ticking noise normal in a 997?

Yes, when the engine is cold and has been stood a while it can take a few minutes for the oil to circulate. This is down to the design of the Flat 6 engine. However, it could be a sign of worn hydraulic lifters or it could be a sign of what is known as piston slap, depending on where the noise is coming from and the tone etc.
