How do I check the oil level on my 986 Boxster?

CAUTION

Danger of engine or catalytic converter damage if oil level is incorrect!
Check oil level regularly
Oil level must not fall below the minimum marking or rise above the maximum marking!
Only use engine oils approved by Porsche AG!

Note:
The engine oil level can be checked using the display in the instrument cluster or the oil dipstick.
Any malfunctions in the oil level indicator show up via a warning in the instrument cluster.
The engine oil level can be checked whether the engine is cold or at operating temperature. When measuring with the onboard computer, the waiting time is shortest if the vehicle has been parked in a horizontal position overnight.
The requirements for measuring the oil level can be called up using the Info function.
Requirements for correct oil level measurement (not when refuelling)
Vehicle is horizontal.
Engine is off.
Ignition is switched on.
Initiating measurement:

Note:
The waiting time for the oil level measurement is indicated via a time display and segments running through the oil level indicator.

1. Switch on ignition (do not start engine). The measurement starts automatically.

Note:
If the oil level drops below the minimum marking, the segment below it starts flashing!
The differential quantity between the minimum and the maximum marking is approx. 1.25 litres, i.e. one segment corresponds to approx. 0.2 to 0.25 litres of oil.
Engine oil must never be filled or topped up above the maximum marking.

2. The oil level on the segment display can be read off after the measurement is completed. The permitted oil level lies between the minimum and maximum markings.

The oil level measurement can also be initiated in the OIL menu (requirements as above).

3. Push the on-board computer operating lever forwards.
4. Using the operating lever, select the OIL menu item.

Oil level measurement during refuelling

5. During refuelling, the oil level is measured in the background. If the oil level is too low, the Check Oil Level message appears in the display of the onboard computer.

Note:
This measurement is performed only if the following requirements are met.
Vehicle is horizontal.
Engine is at operating temperature.
Ignition is off.
Refuelling is completed within 15 minutes.

Measurement using the oil dip stick

Requirements for a correct oil level measurement
Vehicle is horizontal.
Engine is off and at operating temperature.
Allow the engine oil to flow back into the oil pan for a few minutes.

6. Open the engine cover. Remove the oil dipstick and wipe it with a clean, lint-free cloth.
7. Push in the oil dipstick right to the stop, remove it again and read off the oil level.

Note:
The oil level must be between the minimum and maximum markings.
If necessary, adjust the engine oil level (pour in engine oil slowly) and check it again.
Oil levels must never fall below or rise above the minimum or maximum markings respectively. The differential quantity between the markings is approx. 1.25 litres.

8. Top up engine oil if necessary. To do this, screw off the cap on the oil filler neck.
9. Check oil level again after a few minutes. Carefully screw on cap.
